Hey Mike! This article was a really interesting read and opened my eyes to a few things. I had no idea about the alpha and beta fat cells. Perhaps I have more alpha cells in my belly / hips area. I am a 21 year old female, 5’8 and 135 lbs. I do about 3 days of resistance training (arms, abs, legs), and 4 days of cardio (one of which includes HIIT). I have a pretty clean diet and seriously can’t figure out why my body still looks the same after months. I’m not by any means fat or even chubby. I just have the smallest amount of fat to lose around my stomach and hips and would be happy forever if I could, but I just CAN’T seem to lose it. Do I need to do heavier weight lifting? Maybe my calorie deficit isn’t enough. I would say I eat around 1600 – 2,000 calories depending on the day. I rarely drink alcohol or eat any sweets / processed foods. What would you recommend I do different to speed up my fat-loss weight? I don’t have much money to drop on supplements unfortunately as I know they get rather pricey!

If you’re among the 30% of Americans who sleep less than six hours a night, here’s one simple way to whittle your waistline: catch more Zs. A 16-year study of almost 70,000 women found that those who slept five hours or less a night were 30% more likely to gain 30 or more pounds than those who slept 7 hours. The National Institutes of Health suggest adults sleep seven to eight hours a night.

Beer drinkers always have a pear shape: belly fat & man boobs – especially as they get older. Alcohol also stresses your liver which has to overwork to clear the toxins. This can get in the way of building muscles.
The body doesn’t react to all fats in the same way. Research correlates high intake of saturated fat (the kind in meat and dairy) to increased visceral fat, Patton said. On the other hand, monounsaturated fats (the kind in olive oil and avocados) and specific types of polyunsaturated fats (mainly omega-3s, found in walnuts, sunflower seeds, and fatty fish like salmon) have anti-inflammatory effects in the body, and if eaten in proper portions may do your body good. But Patton warned that eating too much fat of any kind increases your calorie intake and could lead to weight gain, so enjoy healthy fats in moderation.
Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that your body can’t digest, and it helps regulate the body’s use of sugar as it slowly passes through your digestive system. Increasing your daily fiber intake can result in greater satisfaction after meals, less blood-sugar spiking and crashing, and subsequent reductions in the amount of calories eaten for the rest of the day. When trying to trim belly fat, aim to get at least 25 grams of fiber in your diet each day. Foods that are rich in fiber include pulses, like lentils and beans; apples and pears, with the skin; nuts and seeds; and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and Brussels sprouts. Try this recipe for Tabbouleh with Chickpeas for a fiber-packed side dish or a one-dish dinner!
Visceral fat, however, is very dangerous. It releases hormones that can cause diabetes and inflammation. Inflammation is a risk factor for a variety of health problems, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes. In women, visceral fat may increase the likelihood of needing gallbladder surgery. Visceral fat is also linked to breast cancer.
Get Enough Sleep. Getting a good night’s sleep for at least 7-8 hours is essential for getting rid of lower belly fat. Sleeping less is associated with the production of hormone ghrelin that cause food cravings and you end up eating more. Cortisol levels are also altered due to losing sleep leading to insulin sensitivity and accumulation of belly fat.
Lie on your stomach, stretch your arms overhead, point your toes, and lift your arms and legs about 6 inches off the ground. Hold for 1 count, imagining your legs being pulled out and back, away from your hips.

I don’t think I’m understanding something. Mike says to burn more calories than you consume on a daily basis, but that would mean you would need to eat very little food. 1 apple is 72 calories. 1 egg is 70 calories. An average workout I probably burn about 500 calories. So it is so easy to consume a large amount of calories and burn very little in a day. Am I misunderstanding something?
One of the main benefits of this program is that it will help you to lose belly fat specifically, which is the worst kind of fat. When you have extra fat around your midsection this can increase your chance of heart disease and diabetes, raise your blood pressure, increase your bad cholesterol and cause other negative health effects.

However, there’s also the risk of burning through muscle instead of stored glucose, which is the last thing you want to happen when you’re committing to regular strength-building workouts. Everyone is different at the end of the day, but research suggests working out on an empty stomach might work for short distances, such as walking to lose weight, but not as well before longer or tougher workouts.
12. Do not completely cut eating fatty food as fat is an essential source of energy. So try to intake mostly polyunsaturated fatty acids like sunflower oil, soya oil etc which are also rich in omega 3 fatty acids and they help in shedding your flab.
Instead, opt for high-intensity interval training (HIIT). Several studies have confirmed that exercising in shorter bursts with rest periods in between burns more fat than exercising continuously for an entire session.
Slow down and maintain a moderate pace for two minutes. Moderately jog or cycle to recover from the intense interval of the workout. Continue alternating for 25 to 30 minutes, depending on your fitness level. Perform this exercise two to three times a week to reduce your belly fat.

Engage your abs as you bring your legs and arms up toward each other in front of you and try to touch your toes. Try to keep your back as straight as possible. Hold for a count of one, then return to the starting position.
I have taken up Pilates in a big way, and not only do I have the faint line of a six pack starting to show, I have eliminated all my chronic back pain and CRPS/RSD pain! Plus I do look damn good in my jeans, if you’ll allow me to brag a little.
